Our Dear German Shepherd "Jake" - submitted by Jeff M. - Idaho

I'm not sure how to best pay tribute to a really wonderful friend like my dog Jake. He was a good dog. He had the ability to connect with me like no other animal I've ever been around. When I was sick he'd lay his head on the bed and look at me as if to say, "I know something is wrong. I'll be here when it's all better. Don't worry about anything. I'll watch over things for ya."

Jake was easy to train and always wanted to please. He would sit, stay, lay down, come, and speak on either verbal or non-verbal command. But it never really felt right giving him commands. I always looked at it more like something we did together for fun.

We got Jake from an animal shelter that put down dogs that were not adopted out after a very short time. When we got him he probably weighed about 7 pounds or so. I think he was such a good dog because he somehow new that if we hadn't rescued him, he would have been a gonner. Jake was a mostly black German Shepherd, with some tan coloring. He grew into a big powerful animal who could be quite intense if protecting someone in his family. He liked to sit on the dock with our son William when he'd fish.

We have lots of dear memories like that, even including the day we had to have him put down. He obediently jumped up in the back of the Jeep and let the vet administer the fatal shot. I felt bad, but knew it was time. I buried him up on the hill under a huge Ponderosa pine tree at my Dad's place. It was raining that day. Seemed appropriate because Jake and I always liked being out in the rain together. He is dearly missed. I look forward to seeing him again someday. He was really something special! Love you Jakester!

My name is "Buddy" and I'm a yellow lab. My favorite thing to do is fetch a ball. I also like to bark at cars and go swimming in the lake whenever I can. It's great to be a dog!
